The Art of Letting Go: Moving Past Emotional Baggage

Jan 05, 2024
The Art of Letting Go

Steve Mariboli wisely says, "The beautiful journey of today can only begin when we learn to let go of yesterday." Today, we're not just talking about any art form – we're diving into the transformative and oh-so-liberating art of letting go. Yes, it's about moving past that not-so-fun emotional baggage we’ve been toting around, especially after a life-altering event like a divorce. But fear not! This is not your typical solemn, soul-searching journey. We’re keeping it light, bright, and yes, even fun!

1. Embrace Your Inner Elsa – Let It Go!
First things first, channel your inner Disney princess and ‘Let it go’ (cue the dramatic musical interlude). It's okay to belt out this anthem in your living room. Singing at the top of your lungs is not only cathartic but surprisingly effective in marking the start of your baggage-free journey.

2. The Closet Cleanse – Out With the Old!
Why not start with something tangible? Dive into your closet and let go of the old. That dress you wore on a not-so-great date? Donate it. Those shoes that never really fit right? Say goodbye. By clearing your physical space, you're setting the tone for your emotional space. Plus, shopping for new, fabulous outfits is always a bonus!

3. Pen it Down – Dear Diary Style
Journaling isn’t just for teenagers with secret crushes. Grab a fancy notebook and let your thoughts flow. Don’t worry about structure or sense – just write. It’s incredibly liberating to get those emotions out of your system. Think of it as a detox for the soul.

4. The Power of the Post-It
This is a fun one. Write down all the negative thoughts on Post-It notes. Stuck in traffic? “I hate being late!” On the Post-It, it goes. Then, have a ceremonious disposing of these notes – crumple, tear, or even safely burn them (marshmallows optional, but recommended).

5. Dance Like Nobody’s Watching – Literally
There’s something about dancing alone in your living room that’s incredibly freeing. Put on your favorite tunes and dance away the blues. It’s not just metaphorical – it’s a physical shaking off of emotional baggage.

6. Self-Date Nights
Get dressed up and take yourself out on a date. Enjoy a meal at your favorite restaurant, go to a movie, or simply enjoy a sunset. It’s about appreciating your own company and reaffirming your self-worth.

7. Laughter Therapy
Indulge in things that make you laugh – be it a comedy show, a funny book, or a night out with friends who always bring a smile to your face. Laughter isn’t just good medicine; it’s a fabulous emotional release.

8. The Great Outdoors
Nature has a calming, grounding effect. Take a hike, walk along the beach, or simply sit in a park. It’s about connecting with the larger world around you and gaining perspective.

9. Volunteer Your Time
Helping others is a wonderful way to help yourself. The joy and gratitude you receive in return are unmatched and can significantly lighten your emotional load.

10. Plan a Trip
Traveling, whether it's a solo adventure or a trip with friends, can be a transformative experience. New places, new faces, and new memories are a fantastic way to move forward.

11. Positive Affirmations
Start your day with positive affirmations. Simple phrases like “I am strong,” “I am worthy,” or “I am capable” can set a positive tone for the day.

The art of letting go isn’t about forgetting; it’s about moving forward with wisdom and joy. It’s a journey filled with self-discovery, laughter, and maybe a few new pairs of shoes. So, embrace this fabulous journey, because a lighter, brighter, and more fabulous you await on the other side!
